What is CEVO 4 Fire?

CEVO 4 Fire is a classroom-based Emergency Vehicle Operator Course developed specifically for fire apparatus operators. Unlike traditional video-only training, it uses a discussion and participation-based coaching approach to strengthen decision-making, situational awareness, and defensive driving habits that help reduce collisions and improve operational safety.

The course provides comprehensive instruction on apparatus inspection, vehicle characteristics, SCC principles (Scanning, Cushion of Safety, and Communicating), and both emergency and non-emergency driving in a variety of conditions. It also covers backing procedures, adverse weather operations, and includes hands-on maneuvering exercises such as cone course drills and on-the-road evaluations. Training is reinforced with operator point-of-view and dashcam video scenarios, available in DVD, USB, or streaming formats.

CEVO 4 Fire cis designed to prevent and reduce collisions, support risk management, and help organizations protect against liability. It works as both an onboarding course for new hires and a structured refresher for experienced operators — keeping your entire fleet trained to a consistent, documented standard.

The course complements and works well with NFPA standards and has been used to train over one million fire apparatus operators worldwide since 1998.

How Does CEVO 4 Fire Work?

Instructors use a fully scripted Instructor’s Guide to lead step-by-step class presentations that combine video, follow-up questions, traffic diagram analysis, and group discussion. Training typically runs 4 to 6 hours depending on the organization’s needs.

Each instructor requires an Instructor’s Kit to deliver the course. Each student receives a Response Book used for session questions, situation analysis, and group discussion. A computer-scored final test is included in the Response Book and mailed to Coaching Systems for grading — operators who score 80% or higher receive a CEVO certificate and a CEVO Fire recognition patch at no additional cost.

Apparatus Inspection & Pre-Trip Procedures

The habits that catch problems before they become incidents. Covers systematic inspection protocols specific to fire apparatus — what to look for, what to document, and why pre-trip discipline is a frontline safety practice.

Apparatus Characteristics & Dynamics

Fire apparatus handle fundamentally differently from standard vehicles. This module covers weight distribution, braking distance, turning radius, rollover risk, and the physics behind why apparatus operation demands a higher level of awareness than everyday driving.

SCC: Scanning, Cushion of Safety & Communicating

The three defensive driving fundamentals that apply to every trip, every environment, and every level of emergency. Builds the systematic habits that prevent the most common crash scenarios before they develop.

Emergency Driving & Due Regard

How to operate safely under lights and sirens — covering activation criteria, intersection clearing, speed management, and the legal and operational expectations that come with emergency response.

Non-Emergency Driving

The crashes that happen when no one is rushing. Covers the habits and awareness gaps that lead to incidents during routine, non-emergency operation — often the most overlooked risk in fleet safety programs.

Backing & Low-Speed Maneuvering

A leading cause of apparatus damage and near-miss events. Covers spotter protocols, spatial awareness, and the cone course and on-the-road maneuvering exercises that build the muscle memory to prevent them.
