Coaching the School Bus Driver 2 is a classroom safety training course built specifically for school bus drivers. It uses a proven discussion and participation-based coaching methodology to build the defensive driving habits, situational awareness, and decision-making skills that keep students and drivers safe on every route.

The course covers all key defensive driving concepts including vehicle inspection and characteristics, SCC (Scanning, Cushion of Safety, Communicating), and situational driving, along with the special considerations unique to school bus operation — backing, bus stop procedures, driving in adverse weather, field trips, railroad crossings, and driver and student interactions.

Video presentations feature driver point-of-view footage and real situational driving scenarios.

Coaching the School Bus Driver 2 is designed to reduce collisions, support risk management, and help organizations protect against liability in one of the most responsibility-intensive driver roles there is.
It works as both an onboarding program for new hires and a structured refresher for experienced drivers, and it complements and expands upon the concepts taught in CDL training to give school bus drivers the practical, route-specific skills CDL programs do not cover.

How Does Coaching the School Bus Driver 2 Work?

Instructors use a fully scripted Instructor’s Guide to lead step-by-step classroom presentations that combine video, follow-up questions, traffic diagram analysis, group discussion, and a final test and practical evaluation.

Training typically runs 4 to 6 hours depending on the organization’s needs. Each instructor requires an Instructor’s Kit to deliver the course and each student receives a Response Book used for written exercises and situation analysis for group discussion.

Each Response Book contains a certificate of completion to be signed and issued by the instructor conducting the training.

Vehicle Inspection and Characteristics

The systematic pre-trip checks every school bus driver must complete before the route begins, covering what to look for, what to document, and how school bus characteristics differ from standard vehicles in ways that affect every driving decision.

SCC: Scanning, Cushion of Safety and Communicating

The three defensive driving fundamentals that apply to every trip and every route condition. Builds the systematic habits that give drivers the time and space to make safe decisions, especially critical when students are on board.

Situational Driving

How to read and respond to the full range of road conditions, traffic scenarios, and environments school bus drivers encounter on daily routes, using real driver point-of-view footage and situational diagrams analyzed in group discussion.

Bus Stop Procedures

The high-risk moments when students are boarding and alighting. Covers safe positioning, traffic management, student supervision, and the protocols that protect students at the most vulnerable point of every route.

Railroad Crossings

The specific procedures and legal requirements for approaching, stopping at, and crossing railroad tracks safely with students on board, where the consequences of error are severe.

Backing

One of the highest-risk maneuvers for large vehicles. Covers spotter protocols, mirror use, spatial awareness, and the habits that make backing safer in the school yards, loading areas, and tight spaces drivers navigate daily.

Adverse Weather and Special Conditions

How to adjust speed, following distance, and decision-making in rain, snow, ice, and low-visibility conditions, with particular attention to the additional responsibility that comes with transporting students in challenging conditions.

Field Trips

The unique challenges of unfamiliar routes, non-standard schedules, and varied environments that come with field trip operation, and how drivers can maintain the same safety standard outside of their regular route.
